Myanmar Ophthalmological Society

The Myanmar Ophthalmological Society was established in 1957 with the mission to upgrade and maintain the standard of eye care practice through provision of knowledge and training, to maintain and develop professional integrity and dignity, to promote continuing education and research in the field of ophthalmology, to collaborate and implement the activities of the national eye health plan and to inspire unity, friendship and cooperation among its members.

The Society holds the Myanmar Ophthalmological Conference annually. It also convenes a Mid- Year Academic Meeting every 2 years and organizes quarterly Combined Clinical Meetings in teaching eye hospitals.

It observes the annual WHO World Sight Day and World Glaucoma Week by holding public meetings and health talks, displaying posters and conducting free eye clinics and outreach surgery.

Society membership grew to 444 ophthalmologists in 2019.

Myanmar Ophthalmological Society

The Myanmar Ophthalmological Society, Myanmar Medical Association was first formed in 1957 with 14 members. The Society functions as a specialty society of Myanmar Medical Association. Membership grew to 444 ophthalmologists in 2019.

The executive committee members are elected at the Annual General Meeting and serve on a 2 year basis. The Society holds the Ophthalmic Conference annually and the recent 31st Myanmar Ophthalmological Conference in October 2019. It also convenes a mid- year Academic Meeting every 2 years in the historical city of Mandalay.

The Society collaborates in implementing the activities of National Eye Health Plan of the Prevention of Blindness Department of Ministry of Health and Sport. Combined Continuing Medical Education programs are held every three months in affiliated universities. The society bulletins are published and disseminated to the society members every three months.

In Myanmar, eye health care is mainly covered by the government sector which includes 4 tertiary eye care centers and 60 secondary eye centres all over the country working together with Trachoma control and Prevention of blindness department(TCPBL).But now TCPBL is waiting to change the name to PBL because of declaration of Trachoma eradication soon.

As the mid level ophthalmic assistants, refractionist is one of the category for which the training centre is only one in Yangon Eye Hospital.To upgrade the standard of our refractionists, the 2 years optometrist training course has just started once and finished on august 2019 with the support of Sight For All. This program trained 9 members from all over the country.
